50 Favorite Film Music Cues - Casablanca
Dooley Wilson - As Time Goes By
Written in 1931, the song didn’t become an iconic pop standard until it was sung by Dooley Wilson in Casablanca. Interestingly, the song’s famous opening line, “You must remember this…”, is actually the start of the song’s chorus as it was originally written and performed.I love this moment in Casablanca because it illustrates just how much we associate memories with music. Ilsa talks Sam into playing it as she recalls her time in Paris with Rick, but as the song begins, her faces falls and she starts to cry. Rick can’t even stand to hear the song for more than a moment as he rushes to Sam yelling at him to stop playing it. Memories and music, they just go together.
